The angler who has captured back‑to‑back National Walleye Tour championships will examine how organized digital instruction can reshape the way niche knowledge is recorded, taught, and implemented across fields that have historically lacked formal learning frameworks, with particular emphasis on fishing education and forward‑facing sonar.
Tom Huynh’s journey to becoming a two‑time National Walleye Tour Champion started a long way from the hub of professional walleye fishing.
Growing up on a cattle farm in rural Arkansas, Huynh spent his early years fishing from the edge of a small farm pond alongside his grandfather. Later, he relocated to the Fargo–Moorhead area to pursue a degree in Computer Information Systems at Minnesota State University Moorhead. A position at a nail salon, initially taken to fund his college education, turned into an unexpected career that has lasted more than twenty years.
Huynh eventually became the owner and continues to manage nail salons in the Fargo region, having spent many years largely disconnected from fishing. When he made a serious return to the sport, he brought with him an outsider’s viewpoint, an artist’s precision, and a readiness to challenge assumptions that veteran anglers frequently accepted as fact.
That unorthodox strategy ultimately propelled him to the highest level of professional walleye fishing, and now to the TEDxFargo stage.
Huynh is scheduled to speak at TEDxFargo CHARGE on Wednesday, July 29, at Brewhalla in Fargo, North Dakota. His presentation will delve into how organized, curriculum‑based digital learning has the potential to transform unconventional industries by capturing specialized expertise and converting it into knowledge that can be taught, implemented, and expanded.
The concept emerged from Huynh’s work co‑founding Tom Huynh University™, where he took his championship‑level expertise and structured it into a progressive curriculum that instructs anglers in the use of forward‑facing sonar technology, rather than delivering it as a collection of unrelated tips, equipment configurations, or fishing spots.
“There has never been a shortage of information in fishing,” Huynh remarked. “What has been missing is a genuine educational framework that allows anglers to grasp why a technique works, how to identify it, and when to put it into practice. This is about showing people how to think, not just handing them another answer to mimic.”
This distinction has grown more critical as forward‑facing sonar technology and other advanced marine electronics reshape both recreational and tournament fishing. Anglers now have extraordinary access to live data from beneath the surface, yet owning the equipment does not automatically grant the skill needed to interpret it properly.
Huynh identified that shortfall early on.
Instead of treating forward‑facing sonar purely as a fish‑locating device, he employed it to examine behavior, movement patterns, and responses. His methodology merged sonar analysis with precise boat handling, environmental understanding, and disciplined decision‑making.
Even though he launched his professional walleye career in his mid‑40s, well after many of his younger rivals, Huynh advanced through the sport at an impressive pace. After securing the National Walleye Tour Championship in both 2024 and 2025, he will aim to make history on Lake Sakakawea in just a few weeks by becoming the first angler ever to win three straight championships.
The same concepts that drove those wins were subsequently assembled into a structured digital curriculum. Instead of focusing on isolated methods, the educational model is built around adaptable principles like fish behavior, sonar reading, boat positioning, and live‑time decision‑making.
The curriculum has attracted students from more than 40 states and beyond the United States, indicating that anglers are seeking more than just additional content. They want an organized framework for understanding and applying increasingly complex information.
“Being on the TEDxFargo stage feels unreal to me,” Huynh said. “My route hasn’t been straight, but every piece of it, from my Arkansas upbringing to working in nail salons and competing at the highest level, taught me something about paying attention, learning, and having the bravery to remake yourself.”
At TEDxFargo, Huynh will investigate an idea that reaches well beyond fishing: expertise becomes significantly more valuable when it can be captured, structured, and taught in a manner that enables others to think for themselves.
