The European Union’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation explicitly accommodates blockchain-based identity solutions.
Technical Standards and Interoperability
The W3C’s Verifiable Credentials standard has emerged as the dominant technical framework for decentralized identity, providing a common language that allows credentials issued by different organizations to be verified across platforms. This standardization has been crucial in driving enterprise adoption, as organizations require assurance that their systems will be compatible with those of partners and counterparts.
Despite the progress, challenges remain around key management, recovery mechanisms, and user experience. Industry participants are working to simplify the technical complexity that currently limits mainstream adoption, with several projects developing mobile wallet applications that abstract away blockchain interactions entirely.
