A fresh scientific effort seeks volunteers to contribute to a body measurement database aimed at enhancing product design throughout Europe.

This initiative tackles a growing issue for both industry and research: many of the body measurement databases currently used to design vehicles, workplaces, medical devices, apparel, and consumer goods are decades old and no longer accurately represent Europe’s present-day demographics.

Data gathering has already commenced at two scanning sites: one in Weiterstadt near Darmstadt, Germany, and another in Lille, France. Additional locations throughout Europe will be introduced as the project moves forward.

SizeEUROPE represents the first cross-border scientific anthropometric survey of its kind in Europe in many years. By employing a standardized methodology and a representative sampling approach, the initiative will create a harmonized dataset that enables direct comparison of body measurements and shapes across different European populations for the very first time.
The survey utilizes cutting-edge, contact-free 3D body scanners. Within just a few seconds, over 150 body measurements and each participant’s body shape are captured in three dimensions. The measurement data is supplemented by a brief questionnaire. All information is collected anonymously according to internationally recognized standards, including ISO 7250, ISO 8559, and ASTM.
The resulting reference dataset will offer a new scientific basis for Europe’s population and support ergonomics research, standards development, and product innovation across numerous industries, such as automotive, aerospace, healthcare, apparel, furniture, and personal protective equipment.
