The company offers insurance products that pay out automatically based on predefined triggers such as wind speed, rainfall levels, or temperature thresholds, eliminating the traditional claims adjustment process.
Parametric insurance represents a fundamental departure from traditional indemnity-based coverage. Instead of assessing actual damages after an event, parametric policies pay a predetermined amount when specific measurable conditions are met, enabling faster payouts and reducing administrative costs for both insurers and policyholders.
Satellite and IoT Data Integration
Descartes leverages satellite imagery, weather station data, and IoT sensor networks to monitor trigger conditions across millions of geographic locations in real time. The company’s proprietary data platform processes over 50 terabytes of geospatial data daily, enabling precise risk assessment and rapid payout determination.
The technology has proven particularly valuable for businesses with distributed operations that are vulnerable to climate disruptions. Agricultural companies, energy producers, construction firms, and tourism operators have adopted Descartes products to protect against revenue losses from extreme weather events.
