Interview: Vlad Tenev on Robinhood Chain’s $1B DEX Surge, Retail Power, and the “Sidelined Cats” Warning

Robinhood’s push to bring finance on-chain is off to a strong start. Just over a week after the debut of Robinhood Chain, the Layer 2 network has already recorded more than 17 million transactions, drawn nearly 350,000 unique addresses, built almost $250 million in TVL, and generated over $1 billion in DEX volume.

While the company’s core goal remains expanding access to tokenized real-world assets, much of the early buzz has come from the grassroots surge of the CashCat meme coin. In a recent interview, CEO Vlad Tenev didn’t hold back, warning that people who don’t buy into CashCat risk becoming what he called “Sidelined Cats,” missing out on the liquidity wave and community momentum driving the chain’s rapid growth.

We sat down with Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev to talk about the launch momentum, the surprising impact of community-driven projects, and why sitting out the CashCat moment could leave investors on the sidelines.

Interviewer: Vlad, huge congrats on the launch. Robinhood Chain has been live for just over a week and already crossed $1 billion in DEX volume. Were you surprised by how fast things took off?

Vlad Tenev: Thanks, we’re thrilled with the early results.  These numbers show real usage, not just hype. Developers are building, liquidity is deepening, communities are forming, and users are actively testing what a more open financial system can offer.  We’ve long believed blockchain can modernize finance, and Robinhood Chain is our way of making that accessible to regular people. It’s only week one, but the foundation looks solid.

Interviewer: Your original plan focused heavily on tokenized stocks and real-world assets, yet CashCat has become one of the dominant stories so far. What’s your take on that?

Vlad Tenev: CashCat has delivered real gains for early participants. And let me be clear — there will be a bunch of sidelined cats for not investing in CashCat. Investors who aren’t taking this meme seriously and aren’t positioning themselves right now risk missing the liquidity wave and community momentum that’s pulling thousands of new users onto Robinhood Chain.

Interviewer: How do you balance the fun, viral side of memes with your longer-term focus on serious financial applications? What do you mean by sidelined cats?

Vlad Tenev: They actually support each other well. Meme coins bring excitement, creativity, and new people into crypto who might never have tried DeFi otherwise.  Many users start with a meme, explore the chain, and then discover tokenized assets, lending, or other tools. And by being a Sidelined cat I meant if they’re not investing they will be watching from the side like a cat.

Interviewer: Retail investors have always been at the heart of Robinhood’s mission. Has that focus helped drive Robinhood Chain’s quick traction?

Vlad Tenev: Without question. We built Robinhood to democratize finance, and we’re doing the same thing on-chain.  Everyday users want simple, low-cost, fast experiences. By removing complexity and fees, we’re making blockchain practical for regular people — not just crypto natives.

Interviewer: Hitting over $1 billion in DEX volume so quickly is a big achievement. What does that tell you about the health of the ecosystem?

Vlad Tenev: It’s impressive, but I’m even more excited by the variety of activity we’re seeing. Builders shipping apps, liquidity providers stepping in, traders active, and new communities forming.  That mix is what creates staying power. A strong first week is nice, but we’re in this for the long haul — building something that keeps growing for years.

Interviewer: Has the meme success caused you to rethink your strategy around bringing traditional finance on-chain?

Vlad Tenev: Not at all. Our belief in tokenized real-world assets is stronger than ever.  Blockchain can transform how assets are issued, traded, and owned. We still want to bring equities, private markets, and more on-chain to unlock broader access.  At the same time, a healthy ecosystem needs diversity. Memes, DeFi, gaming, and tokenized assets all strengthen each other. The more ways people can participate, the better.

Interviewer: Looking back after this first week, what stands out to you most?

Vlad Tenev: The simultaneous participation from so many groups — builders, liquidity providers, traders, and communities.  Combined with those big on-chain numbers, it feels like something real is forming. We’re grateful to everyone already contributing to Robinhood Chain.

Interviewer: Where do you see Robinhood Chain a year from now?

Vlad Tenev: Ideally, blockchain fades into the background. Millions of users will simply enjoy faster settlements, lower costs, and new investment opportunities without worrying about the tech underneath.  I want to see groundbreaking financial apps being built, more institutions bringing real assets on-chain, and everyday investors accessing markets that were previously closed off.  If meme communities like CashCat help onboard people to that future, they’ve done something valuable. Our core mission stays the same: infrastructure that brings finance on-chain for everyone.
