The writer of One Step Over The Line now intends to assist fellow true crime podcasters in expanding their listenership.
Ken Behr operated inside a massive smuggling network for over twenty years before agreeing to become a confidential source for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Today, he hosts Crime Nightly, a true crime podcast that explores cold cases, missing persons, and criminal probes available at crimenightly.com. Behr aims to use the lessons learned from growing Crime Nightly to support other true crime podcast hosts in building their own programs.
Behr’s journey into this world began in the 1970s when, as a teenager, he ran operations from his mother’s home. What began on a small scale snowballed into a large-scale smuggling enterprise that Behr directed for more than two decades. During those years, he crisscrossed the country in a cigarette boat, raced cars, and traveled by private jet, operating alongside some of the globe’s most notorious smugglers and crossing paths with everyone from Hollywood celebrities to killers.
Facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years behind bars, Behr chose to cooperate with the DEA as a source. He later chronicled that chapter of his life in the memoir One Step Over The Line, a title inspired by the 1970s tune “One Toke Over the Line.” The book, Behr’s first writing endeavor, covers both his personal story and the smuggling scene in South Florida during that period.

In the book’s author’s note, Behr also discusses grappling with post-traumatic stress tied to those decades—an experience that, he says, surprised him after years of believing PTSD was something that only affected other people.
Behr’s time inside federal investigations and his firsthand understanding of large-scale trafficking now inform his work behind the microphone. He launched Crime Nightly to apply that perspective to unsolved cases, missing persons inquiries, and interviews with researchers and former inmates.
“We built Crime Nightly and grew our audience fast, and that experience is exactly what we want to bring to other true crime podcasters who are trying to grow their own shows,” said Ken Behr, host of Crime Nightly.
